Letter from the Executive Director

October 10, 2025

Dear Friends,

As the golden hues of autumn settle across the mountains, I find myself reflecting on the profound beauty and resilience of this land—and the extraordinary community that surrounds it.

This season, the forest is a symphony of transformation. Leaves blaze in amber and crimson, the air carries the scent of damp earth and pine, and the hush of migrating wings reminds us that change is both inevitable and essential. Autumn is a time of letting go, of preparing for rest, and of honoring the cycles that sustain life.

It is also a time for remembrance.

One year ago, Hurricane Helene swept through our region with a force that tested our resolve. The storm left destruction, scars, and loss, but it also revealed the strength of our community. In the aftermath, we were buoyed by the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and partners. Your support helped us clear debris, restore habitats, and continue our mission of conserving native plant communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. You reminded us that we are not alone in this work—that we are part of a larger, deeply rooted network of people who care.

To our volunteers who show up with muddy boots and open hearts, to our donors who believe in the importance of native plants, to our colleagues in conservation and education, and to every visitor who walks our trails with wonder: thank you. You are the lifeblood of this Reserve.

As we move into the quieter months, I invite you to pause and take in the beauty around you. Watch the mist rise over the ridgeline. Listen for the rustle of leaves underfoot. Let the season remind you that even in times of loss, there is always renewal.

With gratitude and hope,

Kelly M. Holdbrooks
